Digital Distribution vs. Retail Gaming - Part 1

Welcome to UKotaku/Capture the Frag’s first article on this issue. Over the next few weeks/months I shall be discussing the pros and cons of Digital Distribution services and Retail services in terms of gaming. This article will kick us off by discussing an event that happened to me today which sums up a major pro and con for retail.

As any avid podcast listener will know, I love games, I love them more than a lot of things, as much as my immediate family even; and so when one of my favorite developers (Valve) release a sequel to one of my favorite games (Left 4 Dead), well kids, you should know I'm going to be first in line for some of that zombie goodness.

Megaman 9 Reviewed

Good afternoon Internet,

As an avid gamer and self proclaimed journalist I do end up taking on some mammoth tasks in the world of gaming. One such mammoth task recently has involved a beloved retro series recently revived on the Xbox 360. I am ofcourse speaking of our beloved Mega Man.

Mega Man has been around, one can assume, since the dawn of time (Perhaps Not, but it feels like). The Mega Man franchise has been a staple in platforming for over two decades since the very first Mega Man/Rockman title for the Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom back in 1987.

Dune (Retro RPG / Strategy Game)

So, I finally getting round to watching the over 9000 hour long god-awful Dune series thing from the Sci-fi channel, which turned out to be a total waste of my life. Despite being unbelievably dreadful it did manage to infect me with "Dune fever" once more. One major symptom is the desire to watch the original David Lynch movie, which wasn't brilliant either but looks like a seminal work of absolute genius compared to the dreary 4 hour long rubbish that the Sci-fi channel put out.

Champions Online: Legends of Teh Gamer

The power of the Pwnage swiftly brought about the events of his birth. Standing high atop a skyscraper in the middle of Millennium city; Teh Gamer looks out upon his beloved city ready to dish out his own brand of justice. The plaza below is filled with Mega-Destroid robots, the city in peril. Our champion descends upon the plaza blazing green with the Pwnage. The battle is long and hard, several times almost succumbing to the might of the Destroid, however a well placed shot from Teh Gamers orbital cannon and a quick blast of energy to the Destroid’s Robo-Nads drops the huge threat. Teh Gamer stands over the defeated robot threat, triumphant. Then as swiftly as he appeared, Teh Gamer vanishes to seek out the n00bs who disrupt the Pwnage.

For those of you who don't know that's:

'Nice to meet you, I'm Monty. I am under your care'

Ever wanted to learn Japanese, but found it hard just trying to grab a book and knuckle down? Are those bits and pieces you've picked up from watching 'supa kawaii bishoujo' anime characters just not covering it? If you find yourself nodding to yourself, then I might have an answer to your problem.

Gedo Senki: Tales from the Earthsea

Ok so I watched this "controversial" new Ghibli film last night and was pleasantly surprised. It seems poor Goro Miyazaki has come under some flack for this film, his own father criticised his ability to direct and the author of the Earthsea books was also pretty unimpressed by this film interpretation. Saying that however this is a very good anime film, but not a very good Ghibli film.
